Totally...

Dear Gentle Readers,

I know that new reads here have been very scarce recently. I would apologize but I find myself in a bit of a personal battle, one that started as soon as I returned home from vacation at the start of January.

Alas, here we are almost a month and a half later and I've got no resolution, a ton of stress, and the general yuckiness of the economy. (I sought some relief during the oh-so-pleasant-weather weekend by indulging in some retail therapy.)

In short, welcome to the post-holiday blues...I guess.

The positive side of things - as I see it today - is this:
  • Screw it, hockey season is hitting its most interesting point. Time to quit bitching and watch some guys get hit, a few others score in impressive and not-so-impressive situations, and the special ones go crazy stopping the puck.
  • Buck up and get creative. It's almost freakin' Valentine's Day and I haven't started my list for the Flyers...or the HLOG ladies.
  • Start prepping for the upcoming Battle of Pennsylvania game. I finally get to use one of my Flyers-related Christmas presents and hang out with co-worker Justin. (As long as he doesn't say nice things about Cindy Crosby, I don't care what nasty crap he drops about the Flyers.)

It will still take about a week before I can start posting with any frequency...I do have a few more follow-up calls to make to keep things moving the way the need to do. But, this is me stating my intention to come back stronger, if not snarkier.

Feeling just a little refreshed just by writing that,

Boo! Hiss! Vacation Over!

I have a lovely employer - meaning the organization, not any specific individual. Quite a few holidays. Generous with vacation time for all staff.

I somewhat abuse those privileges each holiday season, taking two weeks off to visit my parents, my brothers, my sister-in-law, and Baron Diesel von Dieseldorff (my parents' German Shepherd/Great Dane mix). It's wonderful!

I always come back to work relaxed and mostly refreshed. You'll be happy to know that re-entry wasn't nearly as hellacious as it could have been. I worked really hard at pacing myself with my to-do list. Just so I wouldn't look like the freaked-out froggie over there.

Look for me to be back to my semi-regular blogging later this week.

And since I didn't specifically post this wish here - thanks to Justin for putting it up as a comment on my last post - Happy New Year!

Stoked about a game with the boys from work,

Oy Vey!

Dear Hockey Gods,

Just let me get through this week at work and I'll be back on schedule here and HLOG. Promise!

In my show of good faith, I'm putting the down-time to some use: writing an HLOG piece, buying a ticket this week for an upcoming game and hoping that converts for a kick @$$ game post.

At any rate,

Oh, For the Love of...

Dear NHL merchandisers,

Are you people hockey fans? Do you watch the sport? Do any women who aren't in kindergarten work for you?

I intensely, passionately dislike your female fan gear designs. To put it bluntly, they suck!

If I were girlie, I might - MIGHT - consider purchasing a tastefully, yet pricey bedazzled or metallic gel-beaded T-shirt or thermal because at least they're in the team's freakin' colors.

But I'm not - girlie or going to buy the sparkly T.

And before you break out the fat Philly female fan remarks, let me just say...nuh-uh. Not even remotely close. Just ask around.

We, the female fans and most all of the rabid HLOGers, demand our fan gear in the team's actual colors, without Swarovski bedazzling, and in styles a lady would wear to this supposedly family friendly sport's games.

Until then, I will be languishing in the boys' department, which is more economy-friendly anyway.

Kind regards,
Flyers.Femme

Troll Alert Level: Red

Dear Gentle Readers,

I love every one of you. Thanks for tuning in here for a hockey blog dedicated to mild analysis and stats, reactions to our favorite sport, and posts filled with snark.

All that being said, a snake has entered the garden and it's come to this: I'm turning on comments moderation due to one hater troll. Absolutely no anonymous comments will be approved.

For more information on the truly annoying (and infantile) affliction being delivered upon the HLOGers, read more on HLOG's August 1 post from the desk of our GM, the ever-fearless Sherry.

All my male readers out there: I don't hold childish examples like this against you guys. Y'know, unless I find out you did it. Then, I'll advertise it like crazy here in really LARGE, really bold, really red letters.

Yoo-hoo, Blogger: Where's my blocked list?

10,000 Times "No"

With just a few days remaining before July 1, I say "no" to:
  • Ray Emery
  • Sean Avery

Apr 30, 2008

That Was Random

Sean Avery, most-reviled Ranger if you live in Jersey, was taken out for the remainder of the season by...get this...a spleen laceration.

Raise your hand if you picked that one over STD, Brodeur, or an Olsen twin when you were in Vegas, 'cause I'm pretty sure you just won a whole bunch of loot!

2/21 Sharks v. Flyers

Dear Flyers,

Pardon the girlie, PMS-y question here, but I missed my telenovelas for that?!!?

I have some truly snarky comments I could make. I'm not going to do it tonight. (Tomorrow may be a different story.)

As painful as that game was for the fans, it has to have been 100 times worse for all of you and I just don't feel like crapping on you when everyone else will do it. I mean, I even feel sorry for Tiny!Briere right now.

Dear Flyers in-house, in-game promoters,

You should be ashamed of yourselves! You should have stuck that ice girl in any other jersey tonight.

Or are you trying to make the fans believe that you had no idea Briere will be booed harder by us in the Wachovia Center than by the Habs fans in the Bell Centre?

Dear Gentle Readers,

I can't even begin to dissect that game. My frustration level tonight was higher than the Nov. 17th Devils-induced blow-out I witnessed from Row 1 behind the goal.

Oh and I did something I have never done before: I left the game before it was over! If the Flyers weren't going to win, I wasn't going to miss my train home for it. Selfish I know, however, I'm 99.99% certain that my staying wouldn't have positively influenced the game's outcome for us.

Dear Mike Knuble,

Thanks for setting up that play and going for the goal. Loved it! (Way to pitch in Rosie and Richie.)

P.S.: The new haircut looks great on you. Did you go to the same place as Sami, Kimmo and Danny?

Dear God,

Please, help!

Also, please send enough crappy weather to give me a snow day tomorrow. I won't complain about the 5:30 a.m. wake-up call if it means I can go straight back to bed and start my weekend earlier.

2/19 Flyers v. Sens

Random Thoughts

Because I just can't manage anything else right now:

Vandermeer...as a winger? I am so confused. He hasn't caused enough problems on the back end that we have to put him up front now? I take it back, that scares me.

Kukkie...ouch! And Biron goes down. Both guys stay in the game.

Briere that's just one reason why you're -21! It's treasonous, I know, but I was over him when management brought him on-board. He hasn't looked Briere-like since the season opening road trip. Fewer of his jerseys at future games, please.

Kiiiimmooooo! A defenceman scores a SHG. I love it. I believe he's adopted the F this S attitude that I mentioned we need. (Thank you!)

Upshall (deflection while trying to get out of the way) and Dowd have put us back in the game.

Hey refs, nice non-call on all the slashing during Cartsie's break-away!

Go, Habs, Go!

Brian, et al. in the booth: You guys are going to kill me! Shut up!

Biron
goes down again. Jeez!

Guys: I'll attempt to speak for all fans saying we will so take that one point, thank you. But, we must ask, where were you for the first two periods?

Should I stay or should I go: It's a shoot-out. We don't do those. I'll know once I hear who's in (or out, as the case could be).

Alfie missed? Wow! Giroux, nice move.

Vermette, darn! Timonen, YES!

Spezza, ugh! Briere...no!!!! Why? Stevens, what were you thinking? He's totally snake-bit. He's -21! A shoot-out is not the place to try and fix that.

Off-topic note:
There was a Boston Medical Group erectile dysfunction commercial during the first period. Eeeewwwww! Where are Always, Platex, Kotex and Stay-Free when a fangirl needs them?

Feb 18, 2008

Buckle Down

I didn't take notes during the game, largely because I ended up sitting next to Tina. She's nice and knows hockey every bit as well as her boyfriend, a former hockey player. We talked, found common ground on several points and made snarky comments in those moments that were just too painful to watch. (That "we" includes the boyfriend, too.)

The one outstanding positive of last night's game was Riley Cote's first NHL goal. Welcome to the club, Riley.

First Period

I loved the first period. It was exciting, high energy and seemed to last longer than the usual twenty minutes. Kovalev scored, but so what? That's what he does for the Habs. Of course, Richie put one in short-handed and that's what he does for us.

Things that made me want to scream:

Begin's hit on Tolpenko.
I like Denis! We'd just gotten him back from a separated shoulder and time spent with the Phantoms. Now he's out with a mild concussion. (The second one of the home-and-home since Downie's out with one also.)

Vandermeer's mental lapse. Requires no explanation at all.

I wasn't too disappointed with the score at the end of the first.

Second Period

The second period seemed to start off with a bang, thanks to Coby's goal in his first game back from the Pain in the @$$.

Things that made me want to scream:

Cary Price. Kid is on his game and that's on fire right now.

Five power plays that don't result in a goal. Four of them were consecutive. Everyone was thinking too hard or telegraphing the shot by taking too much time to line it up. Oh, and Briere was mincing in and causing everyone to slow down.

Creating a 5-3 penalty kill. Self-explanatory when playing anyone, but particularly the Habs.

Third Period

Frustration City. Niitty made some amazing saves throughout the night.

Things that made me want to scream:

The best display of consistent inconsistency in the NHL continues to be the officiating by the referees, something I think all fans - regardless of team colors - can agree on.

We'll see what happens on Tuesday against Ottawa. I'll be present for the Sharks game on Thursday.

Until then, have fun hockey fans!

2/10 Flyers v. Pens

Rant #1: Yep, don't give us excuses. None of us wants to hear them. Moving on...

Rant #2: I'll get to my point shortly but here's the back-story...

So, I'm reading over all the pre-game chatter and articles related to today's Battle of Pennsylvania match-up and imagine my surprise when I read this comment by Ryan Malone:

"Sid gets a lot of attention. Now that Geno's [Evgeni Malkin] under the microscope, everybody is seeing how talented he is. He's right up there with all the best players in the league. He's just proving it now. We all knew that before, but I think everyone else is realizing that as well."

Pardon me, but there was confusion about Malkin being one of the best in the NHL?

We are talking about last season's Calder Trophy winner, right? Do you people think they just hand that sparkly out to any old player?

Here's the deal: Yep, Cindy Crosby is a good player. However, his promotion as the de facto NHL player SpokesBot does not negate and should not overshadow the greatness of one Evgeni Malkin. Kid's record only looks as anemic as it has because he's been forced to make room for Crosby at center (his true position) to play wing.

Look, I don't like Malkin. I have nothing against him personally, really. This dislike is due to the fact that he plays for the Pens and is frequently the on-ice companion of one Cindy Crosby, who drives me up the freakin' wall! Were he playing for the Flyers, I'm sure I'd feel a lot more generous towards the kid.

Dear Guys,

Yep, Scottie's still out. Now Coby's out, too. We have Lups back and his presence can be felt.

Here's the deal. Make today's game the tilt it should be and we all expect. Here's what to keep in mind today:

  • Absolutely, positively no unnecessary penalties!
  • Do not let Malkin get free. Whoever's assigned to him, play the man and the puck when he has it.
  • Gator, let Malone start whatever he wants. Just make sure to finish it.
  • One-word, which requires no explanation: Laraque. Yep, him.

2/06 Caps v. Flyers

As of 10:00 in the Third

Congratulations, Hextall. Thanks, Knuble! (Wait, is the KGB [Knuble-Gagne-Briere] line back or was that a line-change fluke?)

That's all I can say for tonight's game.

Oooh, Blog Candy!

Gentle Readers,

There's a new poll!

So while I contemplate ditching it all to move back to South America - just 'cause it's fun to think about doing it - make your voices heard on the ambiente acá.

Ciao,
Nadine

OMG! Two from the Harem!

Sami! Woo-hoo! (With that assist by Cartsie, and the first goal by the KGB line, did Stevens opt for "old home week" with the lines in honor of Hexie?)

Wait, Randy also! Double woo-hoo!

Final Score: Caps 4, Flyers 3. Long live our consistent inconsistency.

It’s Been How Long?

Tomorrow is February 1, 2008. It’s sure to be one of the worst days in the history of the National Hockey League.

What did we do to deserve this? Is it, perhaps, the trade-off for bearing witness to the greatness of the Great One? Whether or not that is the case, how much longer must it continue?

In case you’re a hockey newbie or just crawled out from under Fraggle Rock thanks to the help of the Electric Company, these lamentations mean it’s been 15 years since Gary Bettman became the NHL Commissioner.

(You have no idea how painful that is to type! Gary Bettman. Fifteen years. NHL Commissioner. No end in sight. I see it and I still cannot make sense of it.)

Here’s a short list of what has been flagrantly stolen from hockey fans under the Bettman Reign:

a.) NHL teams in Hartford, Quebec City, and Winnipeg;

b.) Conference and division names that embody the personality and history of hockey;

c.) Goalies playing as if they were the sixth man on the ice;

d.) The ability to watch an NHL game in the U.S. on the country’s major sports channel throughout the week; and,

e.) The very reputation of the sport, due to two lock-outs in a single decade.

In light of what some fans see as felonious mismanagement by Commissioner Bettman of the job he was selected to do, I ask the hockey faithful to consider an increase of complaints on this sad anniversary. Bring an end to the madness and restore the coolest sport on the planet!

Therefore, I move that:

1.) The placement of any new expansion teams or teams being relocated from poor-attendance markets in the U.S.A. must first be considered for (a) cities which lost their teams during the Bettman Years and/or (b) other Canadian sites.

At least two of the teams which suffered this dire fate were in the midst of a recession in Canada. It was not so much that there weren’t enough fans, but rather a lack of funds. Currently, on any given day, the Canadian dollar is equal or slightly better than the U.S. one.

2.) The names Adams, Campbell, Norris, Patrick, Smythe and Prince of Wales shall be re-instated. Additional names for the two new divisions created through expansion may be taken from other historically-appropriate hockey figures or trophies;

3.) The goalie trapezoid shall be removed from the ice;

4.) Because the score for many games in the 2007-08 season have more closely resembled baseball scores than traditional ones for hockey, all discussion of enlarging the goal shall cease and a moratorium lasting to infinity shall take effect;

5.) The recently renewed broadcast agreement with Versus shall be reviewed and inquires shall be made with ESPN/ABC. If a deal can be reached with ESPN, the contract with Versus shall be shortened or bought out so that the sport can reach more viewers in the U.S.;

6.) Because leadership can lose relevancy and/or efficacy after too much time in office, an individual may hold the post of National Hockey League Commissioner for a ten (10) year period, commencing with his/her first day serving the appointment as said Commissioner.

He/she may hold a subsequent five (5) year extension term as Commissioner provided no lock-out or game stoppages related to contract disputes occurred during his/her tenure; and

7.) Future National Hockey League Commissioners should have a working knowledge of the game and fan culture prior to being nominated for the post.

Jan 23, 2008

So...?

Last Night - Yuck!

Basically, two things that have plagued the team all season (so far) happened last night:

1. Lack of consistency or "urgency" as Johnny is fond of saying.

I'm thinking it's more like there's a collective attention span of a gnat when everybody's added together. How else do you account for three defensemen on the ice because you weren't paying attention to your line changes during a penalty kill?

Which is a nice segue into the next item on the list.

2. Penalty trouble...people in Halloween colors spent too much time in the sin bin. Seriously, I don't care if the Devils penalty kill has been 0 for 30,000 since the start of the season, you cannot let them have that many free shots.

You guys have the top-ranked power play in the league, not the top-ranked penalty kill.

Tomorrow Night

Dear Guys,

We face the Flightless Black Birds tomorrow night. Yes, Cindy is relegated to the Press Box if he travels over for the game, but the Pens are doing better than fine without him.

Besides, I've promised that we'll at least pound them a good one to the guys over at Four Habs Fans in exchange for enthusiastic booing of Z the Giraffe. Not only did the fans fulfill that promise, Elder Koivu and his henchmen pounded the Bruins the way we pounded the Pens last time they visited us.

(FHF guys, if we beat the Pens, will you make sure to beat the New Jersey Devils?)

See you tomorrow night. I'll be sporting the jersey, rocking the glass with Kristin for warm-ups, then running up to the front of 212 to watch the mess.

Yours truly,
Nadine

Off-topic: Argh!

Promotion = More vacation time, which perhaps I'll use someday.

Promotion = More pressure to continue to excel at work...'cause slacking isn't an option.

Promotion = Being too effing tired to write a post!

Actually, it's just that post-holidays, back-to-the-routine routine. Meeting here. Deadline there.

I'll be back to regular posts featuring stunning insight and biting sarcasm and snark soon. In the meantime, answer the poll. I need the feedback and your vote may break my internal dead-lock.

Seriously Now

Dear guys,

"We need to earn the respect of our fans here. Our fans are dying for us to work. All they want to see is hard work...Compete and work and not quit." - John Stevens, Dec. 1 post-game interview

Uh, totally.

Stevens is pissed. I'm sure everyone of you is as well, if the report of a minor altercation between Tiny!Briere and (my HH) Kapanen is anything to go by.

The Jekyll/Hyde routine has to go. To roll out two trite - but true - cliches (as though there were any other kind):
  • There's no good reason for what's been happening lately.
  • You're all better than this.
When you work together and don't give up too many stupid penalties, you give me great hope. As I said following the win in Ottawa, please quit flirting with your A-game. Make it part of your equipment so that it goes with you for every contest.

I hope the enforced togetherness of a road trip brings back some of the team zen you achieved in Whistler earlier this year.

Coach, if that doesn't do it, I humbly offer my apartment as a potential venue for a team smack-down/slumber party to help everybody work this out once and for all. I have experience with this from my competition days. (Trust me, if it can work for a bunch of PMS-ing female athletes, I'm sure it can work for guys facing testosterone overload.) Additionally, I am trained in conflict resolution, peer counseling, and active listening skills.

Love yas,

Nadine

11/08 Flyers vs. Diablos

Dear Guys,

Do it again! Start on fire and keep running all game long.

Love yas,
Nadine

Pre-game: MIA

Nope, I don't mean Miami International Airport this time.
  • Gagne is out with a return of dizziness. (Jay Bouwmeester's hit or Gary Roberts' last night?)
  • My Sami is out with a mild knee-sprain.
Stefan Ruzicka was called back up from the Phantoms. Guess this means the musical chairs line-shuffling will continue.

Marty's starting this game, too. Please let everyone be on fire again tonight so that he can relax as much as possible tonight.

Tonight's semi-live blogging will work like last night's...it's driven by the refresh button. I am once again observing all superstitions for away games.

First Period

Guys, c'mon. You want to PP not PK. Knuble got one. Yeah, we score first!

So, um, NO! Someone tell the Diablos WE are the team that scores back-to-back goals. All right, buckle down and make 'em pay on the scoreboard. I'm talking to you Lups, Carts and anybody else on the ice.

Will somebody please inform Upshall that you cannot do that, but particularly if you wear a Flyers sweater?

I am not even going to dignify that with a response. Can we fast-forward to the second now?

Second Period

Put the head case in! (Marty I still love ya, but jeez!) God, be there for Niittymäki.

Pookie at IPB assures me that the Devils never, ever score when the opposing team's starting goalie is pulled. I'm not putting my eggs in that basket.

Hey, we don't need to beat up on the Devils - just let Patty do it.

I miss Sami. We need his speed, his grit.

I see all the "I"s coming back out on the ice. Boys, roadtrips like this stink. It's true, but please suck it up and be a team.

Role Reversal

Normal circumstances:
  • Philly would be on fire in the second.
  • NJ would look like they're dead in the second.

Apparently neither team got that memo today.

Unfortunately, that concludes the semi-live blogging tonight. The dentist will be torturing me first thing in the morning. Must get my beauty sleep!

Oct 31, 2007

Welcome back: Me!

After a short business trip, I am back home. Watch for more posts starting tomorrow!

(Oh, I so need a job that combines my passion for hockey, affords me truly enviable seats, and provides a better paycheck. Hey, Flyers, want someone to head-up a female fans division?)
